Three different women's lives are plunged into crises after one of the women opens a Pandora’s Box that ties all three women together in ways no one could have suspected.

Opening in modern day, teenage Alice lives a life on the road with her mother, incessantly pursued by bad luck. Her mother has always forbidden her from having any contact with her grandmother — even banning Alice from reading her grandmother's mysterious classic book of pitch black fairy tales, "Tales from the Hinterland." But when Alice's mother is kidnapped, Alice discovers that the Hinterland is not just a story, and that its strange supernatural forces lie behind her mother's disappearance. Donny Herbert, a 34-year-old Buffalo, NY, firefighter, is trapped for six minutes without oxygen before he is rescued. Herbert survives but only in a non-responsive state. When doctors try a drug that normally is for attention deficit or Parkinson’s disease, he wakes up and he spends the day reuniting with his family. After 15 hours though, Herbert becomes unresponsive again, and dies a year later.
