A former special ops pilot Maya sees an unthinkable image captured by her nanny cam while she is at work: her 2-year-old daughter playing with Maya's husband, Joe — who had been brutally murdered two weeks earlier.

Set in the summer of 1876 in San Francisco in the grip of a record-breaking heatwave, a smallpox epidemic spreads through the city, along with festering racism and fear.
