Over the course of a hot summer day in Los Angeles, the lives of 25 young Angelenos intersect. A skating guitarist, a tagger, two wannabe rappers, an exasperated fast-food worker, a limo driver—they all weave in and out of each other’s stories. Through poetry they express life, love, heartache, family, home, and fear. One of them just wants to find someplace that still serves good cheeseburgers.

A bunch of musicians in the late 1970s discover the smooth sounds and smoother lifestyle that is yacht rock, the soft rock music genre that takes over FM radio during that era.

1919. Stefan and his father Mike fled Ukraine for the New World, where they struggle to earn enough to re-unite the family. Stefan is instantly smitten with the Jewish suffragette neighbor, Rebecca – but Rebecca’s brother Moishe and Mike oppose the would-be Romeo and Juliet. Returned soldiers, angry at the lack of jobs after the war, violently threaten the city’s immigrants, including Emma, the refugee from racist violence in Oklahoma. When a movement develops for workers to leave their jobs in protest, AJ Anderson, a wealthy lawyer, pits all against each other in a dramatic and inspirational final stand.

Joe Gillis, a hunky but bankrupt screenwriter, is hired by washed-up silent screen star Norma Desmond to pen her a comeback star vehicle. Gillis has had his latest screenplay rejected by the studios, and, desperate, takes up Desmond's offer to write Salome for her. She demands that he stay with her while he writes, and soon he becomes a virtual prisoner of the actress and her gloomy house.
